Susan Landis & Hero
Since she was a teenager, Susan Check-Landis has had a dog as a family pet, getting by with some basic obedience classes through the years. In June of 2002, fate brought her and a 6-month old Miniature Schnauzer, named Hero, together. Their journey through the world of obedience training began. Poorly socialized, afraid of strangers, especially men, and overly aggressive toward other dogs, Hero, was immediately enrolled in obedience and hasn’t left the classroom since. With Carol Heisterhagen and Brenda Hasbargen’s instruction and support and Joanne Fleming’s seminars offering insight and guidance, Hero has achieved several impossible dreams:
- Fall of 2004, his Companion Dog title (CD) and 2 fourth place finishes.
- In 2005, Rally Novice (RN – with 1 fourth place), Rally Advance (RA – with 1 fourth place), and Rally Excellent titles (RE – 2 firsts and 1 fourth place finish).
- Spring of 2006, a Rally advanced Excellent (RAE) title, receiving 5 firsts, 4 seconds, 5 thirds, and 1 fourth place finish.
- Fall of 2006, his Companion Dog Excellent (CDX) title, receiving 3 second place finishes.
A big fan of Rally Obedience, Susan credits her early participation in Rally before it became an AKC titled class, as particularly beneficial. Hero was exposed to other people and dogs and their first ring experiences together was positive and fun. Susan is currently assisting Carol Heisterhagen with all levels of Rally classes, while competing with Hero for his second RAE title. She also continues to train with CTS, working on Hero's exercises for the Utility ring.
Hero and Susan also qualified to show at the ALL STARS dog show in York PA in 2008. Hero was a little working demon, and due to circumstances beyond their control, just missed out at taking the 4th place ribbon in the combined classes of Advanced and Excellent Rally, titled Super Rally.
In the spring of 2009, Hero has obtained his first leg of his Utilty Title, walking out of the ring with the blue ribbon and one very proud mother!
